Located on the hills of old Cannes, in the ruins of a medieval castle belonging to the Lérins monks and classed as an historic monument, the Musee de la Castre overlooks the Croisette, bay and Iles de Lérins.
In the beginning, the collections left to the Town by Baron Lycklama in 1877 were the reflection of an enlightened amateur’s taste for antiquities, orientalism and through ethnography and primitive art, cosmopolitism and travel.
The art collections and objects from Oceana, Himalayas and the Americas are presented in a suite of small rooms surrounded by gardens, a rich collection of Mediterranean antiquities and pre-Columbian ceramics.
The Saint Anne Chapel (12th century) brings together an exceptional collection of musical instruments from all over the world (Asia, Africa, America, Oceana).
Three rooms dedicated to Provencal and local painting of the 19th century with Cannes and Riviera landscapes , open out onto the museums courtyard and the 12th century square tower (109 steps), where a wonderful view awaits.
