Visite Cagnes sur Mer – Château Museum

Château Museum

The jewel of the Medieval Village…

Erected around 1300 by Rainier Grimaldi, Lord of Cagnes and Admiral of France, this Château-Fortress sustained many sieges and attacks before

being transformed, in 1620 by Jean-Henri Grimaldi into a Lords dwelling, then possessing the charm and rich decor of a palace.

Bought by the town in 1937, it became the municipal museum in 1946 and then declared a Historical Monument in 1948. Today it is an extraordinary

venue that houses the Ethnographical museum of the Olive tree, the Solidor donation (40 portraits of Suzy Solidor painted by famous

artists such as Cocteau, Dufy, Foujita, Lempicka, Laurencin, Picabia, Van Dongen…), as well as exceptional Baroque painted ceilings.

The Grimaldi Château-Museum also holds temporary contemporary art exhibitions in this unique, harmonious decor of strong Italian influence with

ornate marble, sculptures and trompe l’oeil.
